Game of Thrones Season 2 finale

Game of Thrones Season 2

The second season of Game of Thrones has just ended and the fans are already looking forward to the next season. A year seems as a long time to wait for our return to Westeros, especially for those who haven’t read the book because Internet is full of spoilers, which is why I bought the books after watching the first season and I have already finished them. Let’s make a quick analysis of what I liked in this season

A storm of swords

I’m actually reading the third book of A song of ice and fire: A Storm of Swords. It keeps the level of entertainment and amusement of the two previous books.
This book is enormous. The edition I bought has more than a thousand pages, and I haven’t even reached the middle of the book yet. I can’t write about the events in the first half of the book without spoiling it but I can say that it keeps the story flowing and the surprises keep coming with every chapter.

Game of Thrones – Season Finale

Warning: Spoilers! Spoilers! Spoilers! If you haven’t watched Game of Thrones and you don’t want to know how the season ends don’t read this article.

“You win or you die” – Cersei Lannister.

That phrase resumes Game of Thrones perfectly. After finishing its first ten-episode season, Game of Thrones has reached a position between my top ten series of all times. I know that all the people who haven’t read the books are still shocked by the brutal end of the chapter nine “Baelor”, even though I knew what was going to happen I couldn’t avoid the feeling of unpleasantness.  Eddard Stark had been the most rightful character in this season, even when confronting his trial and certain death; he only decided to put aside his honor in order to try to preserve his sons and daughters life.

It is obvious that the series producers had great confidence in its success, because the series finale is just the beginning of new and deeper arguments and storylines; obviously this is a consequence of the way the books are written, but anyway, they made a great bid taking the decision of making a series following the book’s structure.

What happened in the last chapter? The war has just started, Robb Stark is the new acclaimed King of the North, Jaime Lannister is a prisoner of the Stark, a sadistic King Joffrey is acting in his own agenda, and Jon Stark has just departed to the north of the wall, where the White Walkers live and hunt.

A beautiful girl and a dragon = EPIC!

But the greatest scene of the season finale came in the last minutes with Daenerys confronting the loss of her husband and her unborn child. When I watched her entering to the pyre where Khal Drogo’s body was burning, my heart started to beat faster. The last scene was perfect, with Daenerys emerging from the ashes like a phoenix, with three new baby dragons and all the remaining people of her tribe proclaiming her as their new Khaleesi. A naked beautiful girl with a dragon over her shoulder was the perfect definition of the most pure medieval fantasy.

Since we have to wait for the start of the second season until 2012, it seems like a very distant future. Game of Thrones was perfect most of the time, with only minor flaws eclipsed by the great work of actors, writers and all the staff. I suppose that is time to start reading the next book.

Don’t forget: Winter is coming…

Game Of Thrones

House MD, The Walking Dead, The Big Bang Theory and Californication are good examples of series that always give you a feeling of emptiness when a season ends, and let you eager to watch a new season as soon as possible. In the last weeks, a new TV series has joined this group of special and unforgettable series (for me): Game of Thrones.

Game of Thrones is an American medieval fantasy television series created for HBO by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, featuring a predominantly British and Irish cast. The series is based on author George R. R. Martin‘s best-selling A Song of Ice and Fire series of seven planned fantasy novels, the first of which is called A Game of Thrones. The series debuted in the U.S. on April 17, 2011 (Extract from Wikipedia).

Game of Thrones

The epic-fantasy-medieval stories have always been very attractive for me. I grow up reading Jules Verne’s novels and J.R.R Tolkien’s books, so when I heard about a new series about a medieval world with dragons, princess, wars, and all the common elements in a good fantasy story I was a little doubtful about how good this new series could be. I hadn’t read any of the books yet, so my knowledge of the Martin’s books was almost zero. Anyway, I had read some excellent critics about the series from the people who had watched the first six episodes in a private play for the critics, so I decided to wait for the premiere and give an opportunity to this new fantasy world.

It was love at first sight, or at first chapter to say it properly.

The series is all I could have wait from an epic medieval world and even more. Every character is well constructed, with his/her own ambitions, motivations, fears and desires, it’s almost impossible to guess what is going to happen and sometimes you can’t even tell if somebody is totally mean or totally good, that is the best sign of the richness of every character’s personality. The landscapes selected to recreate the book’s world are incredible, every location presented in the series reminds me more a stage for a movie than a stage for a TV series, every detail is treated with carefully and the some scenery like the wall are breathtaking.

Characters of Game of Thrones

Relationships between characters

Seven Kingdoms, a horde, a giant ice wall, old castles, an unknown menace, dragons, sword fights, sex (yes, the series is for ages 14+), and a lot of little elements and details that make the series world unique. Well, we have seen these elements in other books, movies and series before, but this time they are mixed and recombined in a very special way that make them feel fresh and attractive for old and new fans of epic worlds.

The series has been acclaimed for the critics and the public, and after watching nine episodes of the first season I have to agree with every positive critic I have read. It’s going to be a long time until the next season, so I suppose that I will have to buy the books to calm my anxiety to know what will happen next in this fantastic world.
